I have a confession to make but first let me tell you where I’m coming from. I not only went to Harvard for dental school, I paid for Harvard out of my own pocket. That felt like a huge undertaking and even bigger success. Couple that with all the hours of work in my dental office and many additional continuing education courses, not even mentioning two years of hospital dental residency and all the hours of worry and responsibility and you finally get to my confession: I have been known to work with my patients under the assumption that I know best what each of them need.
Here is the scenario: I tell a patient what they need and why they need it. That’s what I’ve been trained to do all these years. They don’t always agree. So I wonder why they don’t understand why my recommendations are not the best way to go. I have all this education and experience; therefore, why don’t they get on board? I have seen what can happen and I’m trying to help them avoid the bad stuff. Why do they want to go toward the bad stuff? Why don’t they understand what I’m telling them is the best way to their health and happiness?
WHOA! I finally get it! I am very well educated in oral medicine and I have much experience in taking care of people’s mouths and I’m even considered to be a pretty good listener. BUT until I put my knowledge on the back burner and learn more of each patient’s story of what is going on “behind the teeth” I will not be the best guide that I can be to lead my patients to good oral health. I want to listen not only to learn about them as people but I want to learn from them how they can guide me into their world from which I can gain much wisdom.
I look forward to meeting each individual patient, both for the first visit and each subsequent visit as our relationship matures. Our goal will be to side by side explore the patient’s mouth, find out what presently works, and what needs some changes. And not until we both feel well informed does the patient decide what he/she chooses to do with that knowledge. It is the patient’s teeth, mouth, and health. With all my knowledge and training I do not know the right decision, only the patient can take the proper steps. I look forward to being on that journey with each individual.

The vulnerability we see in Haiti and Chili is also evident in this country, in other forms and oten in our own lives. Life itself is full of challenges, like health issues which present many problems. Tooth aches and mouth infections are a threat to our general health. It is a fact that some of us find more resources available to us than others. But, everday my staff and I feel grateful that we can help our patients become healthier.
Working to make this world safer and healthier for the vulnerable, we now accept Mass Health. If you ar an existing patient who qualifies, just let us know. Also, if you know someone who needs a new dental home…pass on this link.

Invisalign was the company that educated us all about clear aligner therapy, or invisible braces. Starting about 3 years ago you probably first saw it on television. I took Invisalign seminars and started treating patients that needed simple realignment of crowded or misaligned teeth. Now other competing companies are entering the scene and our office has selected CLEAR CORRECT as the most workable, cost effective system. Yes, we will be able to cut our fees for orthodontic straightening of teeth. Call 781-341-8966 for more information.

As you enter our office or sit comfortably in the dental chair you may hear laughter. When you think of places that make you laugh you usually do not think DENTAL OFFICE. But here we do laugh! Looking at our vision statement we see that “our vision is to provide ideal, comfortable dental care in an environment that leaves everyone smiling.”
Does that mean we don’t take our work seriously? Not at all. We love our work; each task is done aiming at excellence. Joy comes with job satisfaction. The joy manifests itself as laughter—staff laughing with patients, patients sharing stories with the doctor, staff laughing with each other because they love working together. We sincerely hope our laughter is contagious and in these times of CATCHING SOMETHING you catch some of it!

So what is special about Dr. Disharoon’s office? Many things are special but let me share one recent experience. Last week a patient not only had a tooth ache but her physical illness was offering many challenges on the day of her visit: pain upon walking, nausea from medication, only to mention a couple. Upon evaluation we realized her mouth pain was coming from an abscess that needed to be treated in the specialist’s office across the street. Our patient support staff called over to the specialist and thank goodness they could see her within an hour. But she needed to take a prescription medication before he saw her. One of our staff went to the pharmacy, picked up her medication while she went over to his office and got as comfortable as possible in his reception room. The dental assistant/”drug runner” then took the medication over to her. Within no time her pain was releived, she had all the medication she needed and she could go home and rest. She didn’t need a ride home but we have been known to drive patients home when necessary. We LOVE taking special care of our patients! How can we take care of you?
